Closed

During lockdown, one of the things which struck me the most was the closure of communal areas, the playgrounds, sports and picnic areas. As I travelled through the eerie silence of London during that time, I began noticing how different boroughs used different materials to effectively shut down these places and keep people away. I thought about how the caretaker’s job had evolved from ensuring the equipment was safe to use to ensuring it was unusable. These landscapes, important parts of our environments and centres of community, had effectively been shut off, the effect was surreal, it was as if the slides, benches, swings, picnic tables had all been turned into public sculptures – static and untouchable.
